The United States contains over 3,000 counties or equivalents, but there are a few names that are much more popular than others.
Not surprisingly, George Washington, the Father of our Country, has more counties named after him than anyone else. Thirty-one of the fifty states contain a county named "Washington." Our third president, Thomas Jefferson, is not far behind; Jefferson County can be found in more than half of the states.
These are the most popular county names across the country. The list countains all county names which appear in ten or more states.
