Utah's Bamberger Railroad
Of the three railroad companies which ran service between Salt Lake City and Ogden a century ago, the routing of the Bamberger was the
furthest east, as it ran right through the heart of the cities of Bountiful, Farmington, Kaysville, and Layton.
Today, it is sometimes difficult to find remnants of the Bamberger Railroad's original right of way. Many sections in Davis County were taken
by the state in the early 1960s to create the right of way for Interstate 15, which obliterated all traces of the railroad. Only the portion
of the old railway which ran along the western edge of Hill AFB is still an active railroad today, `
This information was collected from review of historical topographic maps created by the
US Geological Survey (USGS). These maps are available for free in PDF form. These are
the maps used in this work:
Note: When examining these maps, you may notice that some of the streets had different numbers and/or names than their current numbers and
names. Here are a couple biggies that might help when you are comparing the historic maps to the present-day.
- The map shows a street which is 1800 North on Bountiful's grid and 4000 South on Farmington's grid. That street is now 1600 North (Bountiful) and
Pages Lane in Centerville
- The road depicted as 3200 South on the Farmington grid is now Centerville's 400 North, also known as Parrish Lane, which is the exit
from I-15 for Centerville
- 2900 South (Farmington) is now 1000 North (Centerville)
- All of the West and North streets in Salt Lake City are off by one block as the city reformed its numbering plan in 1970, so the historical
maps depict the Bamberger running on 300 West in Salt Lake City, which is actually present-day 400 West
